DRUMMER’S FIELD KIT

Carefully Selected Routines for the Key Areas of Your Playing

Not sure what to practice?

There’s an endless amount of material you could practice as a drummer. The harder question is knowing what actually deserves your attention.

Drummer’s Field Kit brings together carefully selected routines covering six key areas of your playing:

âś“ Hands
âś“ Feet
âś“ Movement
âś“ Coordination
âś“ Timing
âś“ Dynamics

The exercises are designed to give you a practical foundation for your practice — helping you check where your playing is right now, identify areas that need more attention, and strengthen the skills behind everything else you play.

And don’t be fooled by simplicity. Many of these exercises can challenge experienced players just as much as newer drummers. The goal isn’t simply to get through them, but to pay attention to how you move, how you sound, and where things start to break down.

Inside the Field Kit

✓ HANDS — Stroke Heights & Movement

Work with different stroke heights and learn to prepare each stroke for what comes next. The routines help you organize your hand movement so that strokes land where and when you want them — building a foundation for greater control and consistency.

✓ FEET — Single Strokes, Double Strokes & Control

You’ll work on two essential areas of foot control.

First, alternating single strokes, learning to lead with either foot. This develops coordination between the feet and gives the weaker limb more responsibility.

Then, double strokes with one pedal at a time — often one of the first challenges in foot control when doubles start appearing in grooves and songs, especially at faster tempos.

The goal is to build better control and coordination while developing movements you can apply directly to your playing.

✓ MOVEMENT — Moving Around the Kit

Learn to move around the drum set clockwise, counterclockwise, and from side to side, and explore what actually makes those movements work.

The goal is to understand how to organize your movement so that getting around the kit feels smooth, efficient, and natural — rather than simply trying to reach the next drum.

✓ COORDINATION — Independence Between the Limbs

Work on routines that challenge the relationship between your limbs, including exercises where either foot needs to take the lead. This is a practical way to develop independence while giving the weaker side more responsibility.

✓ TIMING — Strengthening the Building Blocks

Work through a groove-based timing routine that focuses on some of the basic building blocks behind solid playing. Instead of treating timing as something abstract, you’ll practice it directly in the context of rhythms you can play and feel.

✓ DYNAMICS — Independent Volume Control

Develop greater control over the volume of individual limbs. You’ll practice changing dynamics independently — an important skill for balancing the drum set and creating more expressive grooves.
