A Specialized Physiotherapy and Performance Coaching Program for Drummers
This is not a drum course.
This is a 3-month coaching program designed to improve how your nervous system, body, and movement function when you play.
Built by a team combining physiotherapy, neurophysiology, and professional drum performance, this program helps you identify and correct the physical and neurological factors that directly affect your speed, control, endurance, and long-term sustainability.
This program is for drummers who want to
- Play with less tension and more control
- Improve endurance and efficiency behind the drum kit
- Understand the root causes behind physical limitations
- Prevent injuries and support long-term playing health
- Build a sustainable physical foundation for their playing

TRAIN LIKE A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE
Train Your Nervous System — Not Just Your Muscles
In elite sports, athletes don’t just train harder. They train their nervous system.
Drumming places similar demands on coordination, timing, endurance, and precision — yet most drummers have never been taught how to develop these systems properly.
This program applies performance principles used in elite sports, adapted specifically for drummers.
You are not just practicing more.
You are training your system more intelligently.
Sometimes the Limitation Is Not Your Technique — It’s Your Nervous System
Many drummers spend years practicing without understanding the root cause of their limitations.
You may practice for months or years and still feel stuck.
This does not necessarily mean you are practicing incorrectly.
The limitation may exist at a deeper level — within the nervous system, movement patterns, or structural organization of the body.
When the nervous system is overactive or poorly regulated, muscles cannot function efficiently. This creates unnecessary tension, reduced control, fatigue, and physical limitations that practice alone cannot solve.
This program helps identify and address those deeper causes.
PROGRAM STRUCTURE
What Happens During the 3-Month Coaching Program
This is a guided coaching process — not a generic course.
Each phase focuses on identifying and resolving the specific physical and neurological factors affecting your playing.
The program includes:
- Two live coaching sessions per month with the coaching team
- A total of six live coaching sessions over three months
- Personal video analysis and individual feedback during the first month
- Weekly access to expert guidance and Q&A inside the private community
Month 1: Live Coaching Sessions — Personal Analysis and Root Cause Diagnosis
The program begins with a detailed personal analysis of your playing.
Each participant submits a private video of their drumming using simple recording guidelines. The video can be recorded with a phone camera. Professional equipment is not required.
You will also complete a short self-assessment form where you describe your own perceived challenges, limitations, or physical concerns.
Based on this, our team analyzes your playing from multiple perspectives, including:
- Nervous system activation and tension patterns
- Movement efficiency and coordination
- Posture and structural alignment
- Grip mechanics and hand function
- Lower body movement and balance
You will receive personal feedback explaining:
- What is happening in your playing
- What may be causing your limitations
- What can be improved and why
During this phase, all specialists are involved in the analysis process.
You will also have access to the private community where you can ask questions, share updates, and receive guidance from the coaching team throughout the program.
Month 2: Live Coaching Sessions — Nervous System Regulation and Movement Restoration
Once the root causes have been identified, the second phase focuses on restoring efficient function through nervous system regulation and targeted exercises.
This includes practical exercises designed to
- Reduce unnecessary muscular tension
- Improve nervous system regulation and relaxation
- Restore efficient coordination patterns
- Improve hand and foot mechanics
- Improve structural support from the torso and spine
Key areas addressed include:
- Hand function and grip mechanics from a neurological perspective
- Lower body coordination, ankle mobility, and foot stability
- Ribcage alignment and upper body support
- Full-body nervous system regulation and relaxation
This phase is guided primarily by Tuomas Rauhala and physiotherapist Emil Forsbom.
Month 3: Live Coaching Sessions — Ergonomics, Breathing, and Sustainable Performance
The final phase focuses on optimizing your physical setup and long-term playing sustainability.
This includes
- Drum kit ergonomic positioning
- Sitting posture and pelvic alignment
- Breathing mechanics and ribcage function
- Structural support and efficient movement at the instrument
- Prevention of long-term strain and overuse injuries
We also examine stick grip and hand mechanics, including
- How grip position affects tension and control
- How improper grip mechanics can contribute to injury
- How to create efficient and sustainable hand function
During this phase, Kai Hahto joins the coaching sessions to provide additional insight and guidance on ergonomic setup and performance efficiency from the perspective of a professional touring drummer.

Tuomas Rauhala
- Drummer
- Educator
- Founder of Drum Routines
Tuomas is a professional drummer, educator, and coach known for his work across rock, metal, pop, and fusion, as well as his online platform Drum Routines and international drum camps.
After years of teaching and working with hundreds of drummers, one issue kept repeating: pain, tension, and injuries that traditional drum education simply doesn’t address.
His approach combines musical performance, efficient movement, and practical body awareness — helping drummers play with less strain and more freedom.
At DrumRoutines Physio, Tuomas bridges the gap between technique and rehabilitation, translating physiotherapy principles directly into real playing situations behind the kit.
Emil Forsbom
Physiotherapist, Neurophysiology and Performance Rehabilitation
Emil Forsbom is a physiotherapist specializing in nervous system regulation, rehabilitation, and performance-related physical conditions.
He has extensive clinical experience treating nerve-related upper limb disorders, including Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS), which can significantly affect hand function, coordination, and endurance in musicians and drummers.
His work focuses on identifying neurological and structural factors that contribute to excessive tension, inefficient movement, and performance limitations.
In this program, Emil helps drummers improve nervous system regulation, restore efficient movement patterns, and build a more sustainable physical foundation for long-term performance.
Kai Hahto
- International Touring DrummerÂ
- Performance Longevity MentorÂ
- Alexander Technique Practitioner
Kai is internationally known for his work with Nightwish, Wintersun, and other top metal and rock acts. Early career injuries forced him to rebuild his playing entirely — from posture to grip to movement — using ergonomic principles and the Alexander Technique.
Now, Kai shares his real-world insights into injury-free playing, sustainable performance, and endurance strategies. As a guest mentor in DrumRoutines Physio, he helps you understand how to play at your best without breaking your body.

WHY WE BUILT THIS PROGRAM
Built From Professional Expertise and Personal Experience
Our expertise is not based on theory alone.
Every member of this team has personally faced physical limitations, tension, pain, or performance-related challenges during their career.
We have had to study, experiment, and make critical changes in order to continue performing and developing.
These experiences led to important breakthroughs that changed how we understand movement, performance, and the nervous system.
This program exists to help you solve these problems faster — without spending years searching for answers on your own.

What if I cannot attend a live coaching session?
How is this different from regular drum lessons?
Our Commitment to Your Progress
Every drummer’s situation is unique, and lasting physical change takes time.
While we cannot promise that all problems will be fully resolved within three months, our goal is to help you understand the root causes behind your challenges and give you the tools and direction needed to improve.
For many drummers, the most important step is finally understanding why certain limitations exist — and what to do about them.
This program is designed to help you move forward with clarity, confidence, and a deeper understanding of your own body.
